Dental Implants Q & A

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are complete tooth restorations that include a root and crown replacement. Your oral surgeon places the implant post, which is made of titanium, zirconia, or another biocompatible metal, in your jaw. The post gradually fuses with your bone to form a solid replacement root for your artificial tooth.

Dr. Abajian designs, fabricates, and places the tooth part of the implant, known as the porcelain crown, onto your implant post. Sometimes, an implant post can support multiple teeth, as with implant-retained dentures.

How does an implant-retained denture work?

If you're missing all of your top or bottom teeth, an implant-supported denture can be an efficient way to replace them all at once using a dental implant and denture hybrid.

Your oral surgeon places at least four dental implants around the upper or lower arch. Then, Dr. Abajian designs and fabricates the replacement teeth. Some implant dentures snap onto the implant posts, while others are permanently affixed.

What are the advantages of dental implants?

Dental implants are a permanent way to replace missing teeth. They can:

  • Restore your appearance
  • Restore chewing ability
  • Restore normal speaking

When you lose a tooth, the bone begins resorbing over time if it's not replaced. This bone loss could lead to structural jaw problems and issues with the remainder of your teeth. But, dental implants stimulate healthy bone support and prevent these issues.

How long does it take to get dental implants?

It depends on many individual factors, including how many teeth you’re replacing, the state of your oral health, and whether you have enough healthy bone to hold the implant.

If you have oral health problems, such as periodontal disease, Dr. Abajian fully resolves the issues before starting the implant process to make sure you get maximum success.

If you need a dental implant but have too little healthy bone, Dr. Abajian may recommend a preparatory procedure like bone grafting to prepare the implant site.

In general, it can take anywhere from a few months to a year to complete the implant process. Dr. Abajian tells you what to expect at your consultation.
