Crowns Q & A

What is a crown?

A crown is a porcelain dental restoration that replaces the majority of the tooth structure above the roots. Crowns protect the healthy part of your natural tooth while restoring your ability to chew, maintaining proper tooth position, and allowing for all-around normal tooth function.

Crowns can also restore all above-gum tooth structure when they're part of a dental implant or fixed bridge.

When do I need a crown?

Dr. Abajian may recommend a crown in situations where your tooth is weak but still has enough healthy structure to save. This might include situations like:

  • Severe tooth decay
  • Broken tooth near the gumline
  • Cracked tooth
  • Support of a large filling
  • Internal tooth decay that requires root canal treatment

If your tooth is severely discolored, it may not respond to teeth whitening. When the discolored tooth is also weakened by decay or structural damage, it's often too weak to retain a veneer. But, in this case, a crown can restore tooth strength while changing its color to a healthy white.

If you need a replacement tooth, in the form of a dental implant or fixed bridge, a crown plays an important role. In a dental implant, the crown screws onto a post in your jaw. A fixed bridge is usually a set of three crowns. In a bridge, the crowns fit onto natural teeth on each side of a tooth gap, and the middle crown replaces your lost tooth.

What is the process of getting a crown?

Traditionally, it takes two or more appointments, spread over at least a couple of weeks, to get new custom crowns. Artistic Smiles uses the E4D system to deliver same-day crowns in Agoura Hills.

Using this state-of-the-art system, Dr. Abajian digitally scans your mouth and then designs a custom restoration within the virtual design center.

He instantly transmits the crown specifications to the on-site milling unit. Then, the milling unit fabricates your new custom crown that same day.

Thanks to this advanced technology, there’s no need to wear a temporary crown for weeks — the crown you wear home is your permanent restoration.
